Pet Therapy Program

Origins of pet therapy

More than 30 years ago, a physician in Portland, Oregon established the first foundation with the charter of understanding relationships between pet owners, pets, patients and care givers.  The Delta foundation funded the first serious research into an animal’s affect on the health and well – being of people.

The results of that research seeded what has become an immensely popular program for end-of-life care.  Therapy Pets bring calm to patients by their acceptance and love.  Their socialization has shown to decrease anxiety and depression.  Therapy Pets foster calm and joy in the entire environment of care and as such, contribute positively to the lives of patients, families and care givers too.

Halcyon is dedicated to holistic approaches to care giving.  Peace and comfort come to patients and families in a variety of ways.

People and animals have a long and harmonious history.  Pet therapy seems to rekindle ancient connections that touch us deeply.

Halcyon has developed a strong network of professional and volunteer pet therapists.  With an emphasis on community outreach, Halcyon’s Pet Therapy Program is designed to be mobile and accessible to the community.

All patients and residents are welcome to explore the mysterious and healing bonds that draw animals and humans together.

Meet our Pet Therapy trainer and some of our Dog Volunteers!

Deb Nabb began training dogs as a hobby in the early 90’s. She started her own dog training business and offered group classes in the back parking lot of a local pet store. It wasn’t long before she was offering private training packages and meeting clients in their homes, including Patricia Arquette, Comedian Billy Connolly, to name a few. In 1997, she opened Camp Happy Dog, a full service, state-of-the-art facility featuring grooming, training, boarding, day-care, pet transportation, dog adoption and sold high end dog foods. Camp Happy Dog quickly became one of the premiere dog day care facilities in Southern California and was featured in

Fido Friendly and Dog Fancy Magazines, The Daily News (L.A.Life), Valley Magazine, and was interviewed by CBS, ABC, and Fox News in L.A. In 2004, she sold Camp Happy Dog and moved to one of the most dog friendly states...Colorado!

Deb has more than 26 years experience training and rehabilitating dogs of all ages, breeds, mixes and backgrounds. She is also a CGC (Canine Good Citizen) Evaluator and helps place volunteers and their companion dogs in facilities making a difference for people in need of unconditional love and support.
